We are delighted to share our very first ‘Teacher of the Week’ blog post. This entry will allow us to showcase the great work that our teachers are carrying out in their classrooms. Every week we will pick a teacher who has displayed exceptional work.
Our first ever ‘Teacher of the Week’ is Edna Hagan from Okyeso Catholic School. Edna has been selected as she has implemented the programme very well in her classroom but on top of this she also tackles the problem of having children who speak two different local languages, Fante and Ewe. We spoke to Edna to see how she overcomes this problem to run the programme so successfully.
“The Ewe and Fante language is mostly used because the children can only understand the fundamentals of the English language. English language is used to give the children instructions and later interpreted to the various local languages. It benefits the children to use their mother tongue to instruct them so they are able to carry out their task without any problem. The teaching assistant and the mentee helps with the Ewe mostly and I use Fante for the few Fante children in the class. Through this I have also learnt some basics of the Ewe language.”
We are delighted to hear that Edna has found a way to speak to all of the children in their local language, and it is clear that this really helps with their learning and school experience.
