A brief history

Sabre’s story.

Sabre’s journey began when Aubrey Malcolm-Green formed a deep connection with the Brenu Akyinim community in Ghana’s Central Region and they embarked upon building a school together for the community’s children. Then, Aubrey and our first CEO Dominic Bond officially founded the Sabre Charitable Trust, which laid the foundation for Sabre’s work going forward – to provide children with the best possible early childhood education.

2004

Sabre Education registers as a charity (‘The Sabre Charitable Trust’).

2005-2007

Sabre’s project work continues at Brenu Akyinim and with other neighbouring communities, focussed on classroom construction and early grade reading through phonics.

2008

Sabre partnered with architectural firm Arup to design an innovative, environmentally sustainable kindergarten school design centered around play-based learning.

2010

Sabre constructs the first play-based model kindergarten school in Ghana’s Central Region.

2012

Sabre supports government alongside partners to develop Ghana’s Kindergarten Operational Plan.

Sabre turns its focus to delivering play-based teacher training, a key priority in the Kindergarten Operational Plan.

2015

Sabre’s teacher training expands into the Western Region.

The first Centre of Excellence is constructed in the Central Region to support college student teacher training.

2018

Sabre supports the development of a new Bachelor of Education in Early Years degree at the college level.

Sabre assists in the development of Ghana’s play-based national kindergarten curriculum.

Sabre is awarded the UNESCO Hamdan Prize for Teaching Development. 

Sabre pilots districtwide teacher training in AAK district,
Central Region, training every kindergarten teacher across the entire district.

2019

Sabre delivers its largest project to date, delivering its teacher training to all 1,500 kindergarten teachers across six districts in Ghana’s Eastern Region, impacting over 15,000 children. 

2020

Sabre contributes to Ghana’s new Early Childhood Education Policy.

Sabre launches a radio programme and online teacher training to support education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sabre is a WISE Awards finalist recognised for innovative education solutions.

We start work with the Ministry of Education to develop a quality kindergarten school design for future school construction.

2021

Sabre partners with the Government, Right to Play and Innovations for Poverty Action to develop a play-based kindergarten teacher training programme for national roll-out.

2022

Sabre is selected for Global School Forum’s inaugural Impact@ScaleLabs

Sabre is also a finalist in the Jacobs Foundation’s 2022 Klaus J. Jacobs Best Practice Prize.

Sabre partners with the University of Education, Winneba, to train local kindergarten teachers in play-based teaching and establish quality student teacher placements, impacting over 10,000 children. 

2023

Sabre launches teacher training and infrastructure improvement projects in Assin South, Central Region, and Bole, Savannah Region, in preparation for nationwide scaling, providing over 10,000 children with a play-based education. 

Sabre adapts its public school model for low-fee private schools and expands it to 26 schools in Cape Coast, Central Region.

The Ghana Government launches a play-based kindergarten teacher training programme (INSET) co-developed with Sabre Education, Right To Play, Innovations for Poverty Action and UNICEF to be scaled nationwide.

2024

Sabre collaborated with seven universities and colleges across Ghana ensuring student teachers are trained in play-based teaching.

Sabre launched a new project in the La Nkwantanang Madina District, Greater Accra, to further test its teacher training scaling model, reaching all kindergarten teachers and impacting 2,500 children.

Sabre expanded its play-based teacher training to 50 low-fee private schools in the Eastern Region.

Ghana plans to scale play-based kindergarten teacher training nationwide starting in the 2025/2026 school year, reaching all 30,000 public teachers and 1.2 million children.
