Sabre Education has released a landmark new report on its Transformational Kindergarten Teacher Training programme in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The evaluation, put together by JMK Consulting, summarises the impact of Sabre’s three-year kindergarten teacher training project in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The Eastern Region programme began in 2019 with the central objective of improving the quality of teaching and learning across all government kindergarten (KG) schools in the region. This was achieved by training KG teachers in the play-based, child-centred pedagogy; the central tenet of the new standard-based curriculum. Overall, the project trained all 1,487 in-service kindergarten teachers, headteachers, and government officers across the Eastern Region’s six districts.
Michael Klutse, Senior Learning Manager at Sabre Education, stated:
“The findings of the Eastern Region evaluation are a confirmation that teachers and learners in our intervention schools and districts have dramatically improved outcomes compared to non-intervention schools and districts. Teachers in Sabre-supported schools have built much greater competencies in using play-based methods in their classrooms, which have led to better learner outcomes.
“The report gives us confidence that our plan to support the government to train all kindergarten teachers in Ghana in the child-centred, play-based methodology will lead to verifiable improvements in literacy, numeracy, and psychosocial skills for kindergarten learners,” Michael added. “This will stand them in good stead for the beginning of primary school, and continues Ghana’s trailblazing path towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 4.2: universal access to pre-primary education.”
The Eastern Region report is a major milestone in our mission to support the Ghana government to nationally scale play-based teacher training to over 61,000 kindergarten teachers in all 261 districts across the nation’s 16 regions. The qualitative and quantitative data from this document will be invaluable to Sabre and partners’ national scaling drive, as we begin roll out the play-based approach to kindergarten schools across the country.
