We are really excited to announce that work is underway at Akwidaa in the Ahanta West District in the Western Region of Ghana, where we are building a Model Kindergarten School, to our revised scalable design.

The school will include two classrooms, toilets, kitchen, outside learning areas and biodiversity area.  The Akwidaa school will provide quality education facilities to four and five year olds from the local fishing villages and teachers employed in the school will benefit from our Transformational Teacher Training programme, enabling them to implement the Ghana Education Service kindergarten curriculum, which is child centred and encourages learning through play and activity.

Construction started with the drainage areas as there is a slope behind the kindergarten area and as we are now in the rainy season, this was an essential starting point. Once the ground had been protected the site team began setting out the area and the first major construction has been the foundations for the main classroom building.  The foundations were cast at the end of May and the project is progressing well.  The site employs some of the labourers who worked on Holy Child Kindergarten Centre of Excellence as well as new people from the local village, who are being trained.

This school is the second of four Western Region school building projects that we will be completing this year. Watch this space for updates from our new construction sites at Domunli and New Bakanta…
