Last year our Building Better Schools programme featured as a case study in a guidance manual on school construction using a community-based approach in hazard-prone areas, called ‘Towards Safer School Construction- A community based approach’ you can see our case study on page 72, click here.

The manual was made possible through funding from the Global Facility of Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) to Save the Children, who has managed the project, with guidance, support and input from a steering committee comprising of UNESCO, Arup International Development, GFDRR, Risk RED and Save the Children.

The main messages from the manual are now being developed into six short videos. We are absolutely delighted that our good practice in safe school construction using a community-based approach will feature in the videos. The videos will be shared online, available in many languages, and used to educate NGOs, governments and private companies around the world that are building schools.

Michele Young and David Wardell from Save the Children visited our construction sites at Akwidaa and Ahobre and did some filming and interviews with the site team, community members and elders.  The photos below are from the visit to the site at Ahobre.
