The Limited Resource Teacher Training project, being piloted this year, aims to develop teachers’ skills in a variety of classroom practices, without the need for additional materials.  As you may remember from our previous blog post, the training workshops took place in August, with the expertise of 19 visiting teachers from the UK and USA.

Now the teachers have had time to settle into the new academic year, our team have been heading to classrooms to see how well the new techniques are being used.  We are delighted to see at this early stage some very promising practices from teachers using what they learnt at the workshops, especially with new behaviour management techniques and the introduction of regular phonics sessions.

In Pershie Primary, class 3 teacher Emmanuel Dadzie started an extra-curricular phonics and reading club after attending the Limited Resource Teacher Training workshop and one of his students has since won a district spelling competition!  He told us “In fact, if we had not had this intervention, we would be having a big problem in this school.  Many children couldn’t identify letters before, even in class 6.”

We’ve also seen lots of examples of teachers re-arranging their tables to help facilitate group work and pupil co-operation.  It can also be a great behaviour management device, using group reward charts.

We’re now looking forward to reviewing all the information we have been collecting from the schools this term and seeing the start of the impact the Limited Resource Teacher Training project is making.
