Huge congratulations to our incredible Sabre & West African Safaris Triathlon Team who stormed to success on Sunday morning finishing in 5th place! One of the team members, Lillian, filled us in on all of the excitement:

“Aubrey (Founder and Trustee of Sabre Trust) found out (a couple of weeks before the event!) about Ghana Triathlon Federation’s 2nd triathlon being held in Accra and duly signed up a Sabre/West African Safaris relay team.

Fast forward to two weeks later, a paltry 10 hours or so combined training time put in, and some last minute changes in team members and Lillian ‘Run’ Owiti (Sabre’s AfID volunteer), Nana ‘Bike’ Preston (West African Safaris) and Mary ‘Swim’ Njoki (Lillian’s friend visiting from Scotland and fresh off the plane just in time to jump into the pool to kick start the relay) made up the Sabre-WAS Accra triathlon relay team. Who said motley crew?

A not so quick drive to Accra, team briefing at a bar in Osu the night before and a ridiculously early start to get to Legon for 6:15a.m and it was on! Well at least until the chain came off the bike! Hat tip to the mechanically adept, Good Samaritan fellow triathlete who had tools and offered a helping hand.

A slow start in the pool was mitigated by some excellent biking which put the team back on course for a 5th place finish that they were more than happy with.

The event was incredibly well organised and inclusive and a lot of fun was had by all. The whole team were in incredibly high spirits despite being absolutely exhausted and had a very pleasant drive back to Elmina.

There are 2 more triathlons in the series so if anyone is inspired to put together a relay team or even go it alone as an individual competitor, the team’s only bit of advice would be start training early!”
